Hilda's Coffee Shop sits comfortably on San Anselmo Avenue, serving as a practical stop for locals and visitors craving a straightforward, hearty breakfast or brunch. This isn’t your artisanal, small-batch coffee spot, but rather a neighborhood place where strong, no-nonsense coffee meets substantial, well-executed breakfast fare.

Inside, the vibe tilts toward cozy and functional rather than trendy, making it feel like a familiar retreat for morning commuters or weekend brunchers who appreciate generous portions without fuss. The seating is simple, catering mostly to quick visits, though families and groups drop by on slower Sunday mornings when tables are easier to snag.

The kitchen impresses with classic breakfast staples done particularly well—pancakes here stand out, especially if you lean toward thinner, buttery edges over the thick, doughy style found elsewhere. Egg dishes, too, merit attention; scrambled eggs come highly regarded for their soft, fluffy texture, a detail they seem willing to customize upon request. It’s telling that they also stock sugar-free syrup, indicating consideration for diverse dietary needs among their clientele.

Service can show some unevenness during busy times, with occasional slowdowns and limited coffee refills, but the staff’s attentiveness in customizing orders somewhat balances that out. Prices remain accessible, supporting a casual, no-pressure atmosphere.

  • Best for: Casual, filling breakfast or brunch with solid coffee to start the day
  • Who will enjoy it: Locals looking for breakfast comfort food and visitors wanting a reliable, no-frills meal
  • Best time to visit: Early mornings or quieter weekend hours when seating is more available and service feels less rushed
  • Atmosphere: Unpretentious, practical, with a neighborhood diner energy rather than a coffeehouse chill

Now this is the type of place I think of when I say that I want “breakfast food”. We stopped here to get a quick bite and this was amazing! Super generous portions and at a really affordable price!

Hilda’s makes the BEST pancakes (yummmmm...plus blueberry pancakes) ANYWHERE! Best in Marin, best I’ve ever had! They are buttery with crispy edges, not fat and doughy like other places. They are one of three places in the Bay Area that I would trust with scrambled eggs, making them fluffy and moist if you ask for them “soft”. They stock sugar free syrup for those of us that need it. The staff is warm and fun and friendly and really cares. They are always dependable and should be #1 on this list....seriously.

Really great food, strong coffee. They have a lot of unique menu items, eggs Benedict, scrambles, burgers. Sunday morning and we found an open table, so that was nice. Service could be better, a bit slow and we got no coffee refills! Would definitely go back.

Visiting the area and tried it this morning. The pancakes are, indeed, superb! It’s a matter of style. I personally detest thick, doughy pancakes. I prefer thinner ones with a nice “chew” (not chewy. This wonderfully fit the bill. I can’t remember ever having better ones of this style. I asked for the secret, but no dice. They also listen to your order and deliver, e.g. eggs scrambled soft were so, and crisp bacon was just that. Offering two styles of coffee (regular and dark roast) was a nice touch for a diner. Service was friendly and efficient, and we never had to ask for refills. My wife’s veggie scramble was loaded and scrumptious, and they cheerfully subbed tomatoes for hash browns. If we lived in the area, we’d be regulars here.
